In
a week, this 150 HP motor was in operation near 13 hours. It had 497 starts!
85 were suspicious and were automatically highlighted by MerMaid (Motor
Event Recorder).
Who would
like to be the supplier of a motor controlled this way? Who would like
to be its owner? Like in most case, the
electrician cannot correct the problem if he is not aware of the symptoms.
The best time to correct a problem is before the equipment fails, not
after!

65 large corporations,
like GE, Bombardier, Kruger and Alcan, tried MerMaid for few weeks. The
installation is non intrusive and takes less than 3 minutes. Over 200
motors, pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors and other type of vital equipments
were monitored. 32% had behaviours like above, often and every day!
Another 18% had behaviours like this once or twice a week! Only 50% were

How
well balanced is the current or the voltage? Do you really think that
the power utility is supplying what you are paying for? MerMaid is an
event based battery operated recorder. If the value doesn't change, why

of problems that consume 95% of the troubleshooting time of electricians.

Being
the ONLY affordable instrument able to monitor all the phases of 3 motors

the operation of different equipment. This graph shows the average current
used by 3 identical pumps in a wastewater lift station over an hour. It
is so easy to see that one pump do not perform like the two others.
Many PLC
programming errors were found this way. User definable graphic templates
can be created to highlight specific problem.

When
is it time to change old equipment? When it costs more to keep it than
to buy a new one. Most experts agree that 95% of the total cost of a motor
will be its power consumption. What is the cost the old one? A power recorder
can become a very valuable tool. MerMaid allows the user to enter manually
the equipment's voltage or to use our voltage sensor in order to calculate
power.
With
a VFD, it can be useful to know the frequency powering the equipment.
Most settings are context sensitive and automatically display when the
user touches a dial.The settings are entered when its time to display
something, not before installing the unit, therefore, it is impossible
to make a costly bad setup.

MerMaid has 5 other inputs that can be configured for specific needs and valuable instrument data like battery status and internal temperature (which is mostly used as an indication of the temperature of the control panel) are also supplied. When connected to AC, MerMaid uses this to detect power failures. When operating on batteries, MerMaid uses an antenna to detect 50-60 Hz inside the control panel to detect power failures. The glass effect is part of the many display preferences.

And you thought that
we forgot the display? The
data cumulated can be transfered in batch or real time to a Windows software
using MerMaid's RS232 serial port. The data can also be transfered by
infrared communication or cable to a Palm. The powerfull MerMaid software
for Palm allows the electrician to verify, analyze and diagnose electrical
behaviour without requiring a fragile and expensive laptop on site. Several
screens allow to rapidely compare current on all the phases of several
motors. The same screen is usefull if clamps are installed at different
locations on the same electrical equipment in order to detect more rapidely
the origin of a permanent or intermittent problem.
